It is well recognised that occupational health management of healthcare professionals, especially doctors, whose practise is affected by ill-health, requires additional competencies. Subsequently, a set of core competencies were agreed by a joint working group of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM) and the Association of NHS Occupational Physicians (ANHOPS), on behalf of the Department of Health (DH) and the National Clinical Assessment Service (NCAS) in 2000. Training to help deliver the required competencies was developed in collaboration with the Royal College of General Practitioners and the Royal College of Psychiatrists, both of whom have been working with the FOM to develop better working practices.
This CPD workshop focuses on the core competencies. The main objective is to offer an introduction into the relevant and up to date issues that impact on doctors and medical students in the UK. The session covers the health, legal, and ethical issues that arise when managing often complex cases. This is an introductory workshop to provide an overview of the topics and help the participants achieve the core competencies.
The workshop features interactive group work as well as expert advice from members of the FOM’s HHP steering group, including the HHP Lead Prof Debbie Cohen OBE.
The FOM also organise advanced workshops separately that focus on specialist subjects such as mental illness, fitness to practise, communication skills and personality, as well as case based discussions.
CPD points allocated to the training are currently under review.
