Wilf Howe Prize

This prize was established in 2005 in memory of Dr Wilf Howe, a Fellow of the Faculty and former Board member, who was an occupational physician working primarily in the oil industry. He was passionate about considering employees’ occupational health issues in the wider, holistic context.

The prize, a cheque for £500 and an engraved memento, is to recognise an outstanding innovation, initiative or intervention which has delivered a demonstrable health benefit for a defined working population.

The criteria against which applications are assessed are:

  • Successful implementation of an initiative or intervention
  • A clearly defined working population (but not necessarily limited to one employer)
  • Clear, demonstrable health benefits, eg:
  • reduction in stress levels
  • improved cardiovascular risk profile
  • improvements in success of rehabilitation back into work
  • reduced medical retirements

Applicants should be a member of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (all categories of membership are welcome to apply).

Applications must be made on the application form and must reach the Faculty office by the specified closing date. The successful applicant(s) will be announced at the next following Annual General Meeting (usually May each year) and will be invited to receive their prize at the meeting.
